Arlington National Cemetery: A Place to See and Feel History

Meaningful national historical monuments can be found throughout Arlington. No trip to this area is complete without a visit to Arlington National Cemetery. Over 150 years old, it is a place where visitors come to witness American history.

Arlington National Cemetery is no ordinary graveyard, starting with its beautiful fields and arboretum. There are thousands of neatly arranged white tombstones of American military men and women, as well as other important figures in American history. Visit the gravesite of former President John F. Kennedy and view its Eternal Flame. Former first lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis is buried next to him.

Soldiers who served the United States are also buried here, as are their family members. You’ll find touching tributes to them everywhere, including the Changing of the Guard Ceremony, which takes place every hour at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. This powerful place holds the remains of unidentified American soldiers from overseas wars. Keep an eye on the cemetery’s calendar of events: Some solemn ceremonies can bring up to 5,000 people together in the Memorial Amphitheater.
